A Foundation of Opportunity
The story of the Herb Lusk Christian Leadership Academy began in 1995 with the founding of Frederick Douglass Christian School. Established to provide children and families in Chester with access to a high-quality, Christ-centered education, the school was built on the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to discover and develop their God-given potential.
More than a school, Frederick Douglass Christian School became a place where students were nurtured academically, spiritually, and personally. Through strong partnerships with families and the community, it sought to remove financial barriers that often placed private Christian education out of reach while preparing students to become lifelong learners, servant leaders, and faithful followers of Christ.
A Mission Worth Preserving
In 2014, Frederick Douglass Christian School faced an uncertain future. When the school was at risk of closing, Reverend Dr. Herbert H. Lusk, II stepped forward to preserve its mission and ensure that future generations of children would continue to have access to a Christ-centered education.
Pastor Lusk's connection to Chester began years earlier as a running back with the Philadelphia Eagles, when he attended training camp at Widener University. He never forgot the community or its people. Throughout his life, he believed that faith should be lived out by removing barriers, creating opportunities, and investing in others.
From 2014 until his passing in 2022, Pastor Lusk became one of the school's greatest champions. He worked tirelessly to secure partnerships, raise financial support, and build awareness of the school's mission, including establishing the annual Herb Lusk Golf Classic for Children to help sustain its future. His leadership ensured that the doors of the school remained open for the children and families it was called to serve.
The Next Chapter
In 2026, Frederick Douglass Christian School entered a new chapter as the Herb Lusk Christian Leadership Academy. More than a name change, this transition reflects a renewed commitment to preparing the next generation through the values that defined Pastor Lusk's life—faith, courage, service, purpose, and resilience—while preserving the school's longstanding mission of providing Christ-centered education to children and families in Chester.
The Herb Lusk Christian Leadership Academy is more than a new name. It is the continuation of a mission that began in 1995 and a renewed commitment to developing young people who lead lives of faith, service, and lasting impact.
